Evaluation of Road Safety Measures

Evaluation of Road Safety Measures

COMMISSIONED EDUCATION | LUND UNIVERSITY

This course, given by the Department of Technology and Society at Lund University, teaches Road Traffic Safety professionals how to assess and evaluate road safety measures with systematic, scientific assessments. With these assessments, you are equipped to make decisions based on good knowledge about the effects of planned or applied measures.

BACKGROUND

Professionalism in road safety work requires that decisions affecting people’s safety are based on knowledge about the effects of planned or applied measures. Road safety measures influence not only road safety, but also may affect accessibility, travel time, transport costs and the environment. A systematic assessment of these effects with scientific methods should form the basis for road safety decisions. A prerequisite for this task is reliable knowledge about the effectiveness and efficiency of the road safety measures.

COURSE CONTENT

The course includes topics such as: accident causation, factors contributing to road accidents, accident-based safety assessment, observational studies, cross-sectional studies, before-and-after studies, non-accident-based safety assessment, safety performance indicators, behavioural observations, traffic conflict studies, benefit-cost and cost-effectiveness analysis and meta analysis.
